THE HEART BEHIND THE MISSION

Cooper ~ My True North

Beyond the Vest exists because of one extraordinary dog.

What began as the search for a medical alert service dog became one of the most profound relationships of my life. Cooper was far more than a highly trained working dog. He was my partner and my once-in-a-lifetime heart dog. From the moment he leapt into my arms as a puppy, I knew our lives would be forever intertwined. I was his, and he was mine.

He moved through the world with a rare combination of intelligence, gentleness, and unwavering devotion. His soulful brown eyes seemed to hold entire conversations without a single word being spoken. They reflected kindness, compassion, and a depth of understanding few others ever could. In those eyes, I found comfort on difficult days, reassurance during uncertain moments, and a love so constant that even now, they remain the compass by which I find my way. Wherever he was, the world felt a little softer and a little easier to face.

As a medical alert service dog, Cooper was trained to recognize and respond to changes in my medical condition, giving me the warning I needed before a situation became dangerous. Time and time again, he helped keep me safe, quite literally changing my life and, on more than one occasion, saving it. Yet like so many service dogs, Cooper provided far more than the tasks he was trained to perform. He offered trust, comfort, courage, and a partnership that changed the course of my life. Through him, I came to understand the extraordinary bond that exists between individuals living with a disability and the service dogs who walk beside them.

As I documented our journey together, Cooper inspired me to pick up a camera with purpose. What began with one remarkable dog inspired my photography, gave rise to I’m Your Constant in the Chaos, and ultimately became the foundation of Beyond the Vest.

Cooper taught me that the most meaningful things are often found in quiet devotion, unwavering presence, and showing up every day for the people we love.

He was my true north. Not because he led the way, but because he always helped me find my way when life felt uncertain.

Cooper’s legacy is one of love. Following his passing in 2024, the mission behind Beyond the Vest became even more meaningful. Through this project, I continue to honor the life, partnership, and devotion that changed my world. His legacy lives on in every photograph, every experience shared, and every effort to help others discover the life-changing support of a service dog.

This project is dedicated to Cooper and the countless service dogs whose loyalty, partnership, and love continue to change lives every day.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER

My name is Cris.

I am a dog photographer with The Journey Photography by Cris, a United States Marine Corps veteran, and a service dog handler based in Wasilla, Alaska.

My service dog, Cooper, taught me to photograph with purpose. He taught me to look beyond what is visible and search for the moments that reveal something deeper. Through his inspiration, I found a deeper purpose in documenting the extraordinary bond between people and their dogs, a journey that would eventually inspire my series I’m Your Constant in the Chaos and the creation of Beyond the Vest.

Dogs had been shaping my life long before I ever picked up a camera. Raised on a ranch, animals were a constant presence, with dogs holding a special place in my heart. Through years spent working alongside respected dog trainers, working in a veterinary clinic, and sharing my life with working dogs, I developed a deep appreciation for canine behavior, communication, and the extraordinary partnerships they form with the people who depend on them.

Over the years, my work has been recognized with multiple national and international awards, but the moments behind the images have always mattered most. I believe photography has the power to preserve memories, build understanding, inspire action, and create meaningful change.

Today, I use documentary photography to honor the partnerships between people and working dogs, foster greater understanding, and help create meaningful change. Beyond the Vest is the culmination of that journey, combining photography, education, awareness, and advocacy in support of service dog teams and the communities they serve.

Behind every vest is a story.

Behind every working dog is a purpose.

Behind every team is a life changed.
