BEYOND THE VEST
The Constant in the Chaos.
A documentary photography project revealing the unseen reality of life with a service dog—while working to expand access for those who need them.
THE PROJECT
Beyond the Vest is a documentary photography and storytelling project dedicated to helping more individuals gain access to service dogs through fundraising, grants, sponsorships, community partnerships, awareness, and education.
What began in Wasilla, Alaska as one story has grown into a larger mission: documenting the extraordinary role service dogs play in the lives of the people who depend on them. As the project grows beyond Alaska, plans are underway to travel across the country photographing service dog teams and sharing their stories to raise awareness, provide education, and help expand access to service dogs through fundraising, grants, sponsorships, and community partnerships.
Service dogs are often defined by the tasks they perform. But what they truly provide lives in the moments that cannot be measured. They create space between overwhelm and control. Between fear and confidence. Between simply surviving and being able to fully participate in life.
Through powerful imagery and true stories, this project reveals what most people never see: the reality of navigating life with a disability, the trust built through partnership, and the quiet moments where confidence, independence, and hope exist side by side.
This project grows through sponsors, brands, supporters, organizations, and trainers who believe in the life-changing impact of service dogs and want to help expand access for those who need them.
The work – Signature Series
I’m Your Constant in the Chaos
I’m Your Constant in the Chaos is the signature photography series of Beyond the Vest. Through documentary photography and personal stories, the series explores the extraordinary partnership between people and their working dogs, revealing the moments most of the world never sees. The life beyond the vest.
The title comes from a simple truth: for many people living with a disability, chaos is not always dramatic. Sometimes it is a crowded grocery store, a busy airport, a family gathering, or the uncertainty of navigating everyday life. Moments that may seem ordinary to others can require courage, preparation, and trust.
In the middle of that uncertainty, a service dog becomes something steady. A trusted partner. A source of confidence, support, and independence. The one constant in the chaos.
Through powerful imagery and authentic stories, this series reveals what exists beyond the vest: the trust built through years of partnership, the quiet support before a medical event, and the freedom that comes from knowing someone is always by your side.
These photographs are not simply about disability. They are about resilience, connection, and the remarkable dogs who help make everyday life possible.
This is real. This is lived. This matters
BEYOND THE TASK
Service dogs support individuals living with a wide range of disabilities, including mobility impairments, vision loss, PTSD, diabetes, seizure disorders, autism, and other medical or psychiatric conditions. Whether assisting a veteran living with the lasting effects of military service, a child with autism, someone navigating vision loss, or an individual managing a medical condition, their purpose remains the same: helping people live with greater confidence, independence, and stability.
Their roles may vary, from guiding someone safely through the world and alerting to a medical condition, to providing grounding support during moments of overwhelm or assisting with everyday tasks. Behind every service dog is an extraordinary investment of time, expertise, and dedication. Many dogs spend 18 to 24 months in training, learning not only specialized tasks, but how to remain focused, reliable, and safe in a wide range of environments and situations. The cost of raising, training, and placing a service dog can range from $15,000 to $50,000 or more, placing this life-changing support out of reach for many individuals and families. For many, the need is clear. Access is not always within reach. Because what begins with training often becomes something far greater: trust, partnership, and a life transformed.
Beyond the Vest
Some bonds are built through words.
Others are built through presence.
The kind that stays steady in the middle of fear, exhaustion, uncertainty, and noise.
The kind that quietly reminds someone they can keep going.
- A constant when everything else feels uncertain.
- A quiet source of courage on the hardest days.
- A trusted partner through moments no one else sees.
- The grounding presence that helps bring the world back into focus.
- The space they create between overwhelm and control, between panic and breath.
- The unspoken understanding that neither will face the journey alone.
Their impact is often found in the moments that cannot be measured.
In trust.
In partnership.
In the bond that exists long after the task is complete.
The task may be visible.
The life-changing impact is often found beyond the vest.
A quiet reminder that courage does not always stand alone.
Sometimes it walks beside ymetimes it rests its head in your lap.
Sometimes it carries you through the moments no one else sees.
This is the trust.
The partnership.
The bond.
The things that cannot be measured.
The things that cannot always be seen.
The task may be visible.
The life-changing impact is often found beyond the vest.
MORE THAN ONE PATH
While service dogs are at the heart of this project, Beyond the Vest also honors guide dogs, therapy dogs, and other working support dogs whose presence changes lives every day.
Though their roles may differ, each represents the extraordinary bond between humans and dogs and the ways that partnership can provide independence, confidence, comfort, healing, and hope.

THE HEART BEHIND THE MISSION
Cooper ~ My True North
Beyond the Vest exists because of one extraordinary dog.
Cooper was my service dog, but he was also so much more. He was my partner, my constant in the chaos, and my once-in-a-lifetime heart dog. From the moment he leapt into my arms as a puppy, I knew our lives would be forever intertwined. I was his, and he was mine.
He moved through the world with a rare combination of intelligence, gentleness, and unwavering devotion. He had a heart that loved deeply, a soul that found joy in the ordinary, and a quiet way of understanding what was needed without a single word being spoken. Wherever he was, the world felt a little softer, a little steadier, and a little easier to face.
Like so many working dogs, Cooper provided far more than the tasks he was trained to perform. He offered trust, comfort, courage, and a partnership that changed the course of my life. Through him, I came to understand the extraordinary bond that exists between people and the dogs who walk beside them.
He was my true north. Not because he led the way, but because he always helped me find my way when life felt uncertain.
Cooper’s legacy is one of love. It lives on in every story shared through Beyond the Vest, every photograph captured, and every effort to help others experience the life-changing support of a working dog. This project is dedicated to honoring him and the countless service dogs, guide dogs, therapy dogs, and working support dogs whose devotion, partnership, and love continue to change lives every day.
