Beyond the Vest

A documentary photography project capturing powerful imagery and authentic stories that inspire understanding, create connection, and help make more life-changing service dog partnerships possible.

Fund Future Service Dog Teams | Promoting Education and Awareness | Sharing Stories Through Photography

THE PROJECT

For many individuals living with a disability, a service dog is more than a highly trained working dog. It is a lifeline to confidence, independence, and a life that feels within reach.  Often, a service dog becomes the steady presence that makes even the hardest days feel possible.

Beyond the Vest was created to honor these extraordinary partnerships while raising funds to help future service dog teams access the dogs, training, and support they need.  Through powerful imagery and authentic storytelling, the project shines a light on the realities that exist beyond the vest, promoting education, increasing awareness, and helping create a future where more individuals can experience the life-changing impact of a service dog.

What began in Wasilla, Alaska as one story has grown into a statewide project and is now evolving into a national effort, earning recognition through local and national media for its mission and impact.

I’m Your Constant in the Chaos

The Signature Photography Series of Beyond the Vest

The title comes from a simple truth: for many people living with a disability, chaos is not always dramatic. Sometimes it is a crowded grocery store, a busy airport, a workplace, or simply navigating everyday life. What many people experience as simple daily life can look very different through the eyes of someone living with a disability.

Created using intentional in-camera settings, these photographs capture the contrast between a world in constant motion and the steady presence of a service dog, revealing the burdens, bonds, and unseen realities that exist beyond the vest.

In the middle of that uncertainty, a service dog becomes a source of support, confidence, and independence. A trusted partner through life’s most challenging moments. The one constant in the chaos.

At its heart, this series explores what exists beyond the vest: the trust built through years of partnership, the quiet support before a medical event, and the freedom that comes from knowing someone is always by your side.

This is real.  This is lived. This matters

BEYOND THE TASK

Raising funds for future service dog teams is only part of the mission. Promoting education, increasing awareness are equally important. Public understanding remains an important part of the conversation.

Service dogs support individuals living with a wide range of disabilities, helping them navigate life with greater confidence, independence, and stability. Behind every service dog is an extraordinary investment of time, training, and dedication, yet for many individuals and families, the cost of obtaining a service dog can place this life-changing support out of reach.

Dogs that are misrepresented as service dogs create significant challenges for legitimate working teams. Greater awareness of service dog laws, public etiquette, and the realities these teams face helps reduce misconceptions, prevent unnecessary distractions, and remove barriers for the individuals who depend on them every day.

By increasing understanding and helping create access, we can protect the integrity of service dogs while making more of these life-changing partnerships possible.

Beyond the Vest is built on the belief that access should not be limited by circumstance.

Beyond the Vest

Most people will never see the strength it takes to move through the world with a disability. They will never see the weight carried in silence, or the courage found in continuing forward when every day demands more than most will ever know.

What often goes unseen is the strength found in never having to face it alone. A familiar heartbeat. The quiet reassurance of a head resting gently against a shoulder. A constant presence when there is little left to give.

Found in the quiet certainty that they do not face the journey alone. Found in a partnership built on trust, devotion, and countless unseen moments. One that carries them long after the task is complete.

The task may be visible.

The life-changing impact is often found beyond the vest.

MORE THAN ONE PATH

While service dogs are at the heart of this project, Beyond the Vest also honors guide dogs, therapy dogs, and other working support dogs whose presence changes lives every day.

Though their roles may differ, each represents the extraordinary bond between humans and dogs and the ways that partnership can provide independence, confidence, comfort, healing, and hope.

THE HEART BEHIND THE MISSION

Cooper ~ My True North

Beyond the Vest exists because of one extraordinary dog.

Cooper was my service dog, my partner, and my constant in the chaos. Through his unwavering devotion, he changed the course of my life and helped me discover the extraordinary bond that exists between individuals living with a disability and the service dogs who walk beside them.

He was the inspiration behind Beyond the Vest and remains the heart of its mission. He was my true north. Not because he led the way, but because he always helped me find my way when life felt uncertain.

His legacy is one of love. Through this project, I continue to honor the life, partnership, and unwavering devotion that changed my world.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER

My name is Cris.

I am a dog photographer with The Journey Photography by Cris, a United States Marine Corps veteran, and a service dog handler based in Wasilla, Alaska.

Cooper, my service dog, taught me to photograph with purpose. He taught me to look beyond what is visible and search for the moments that tell a deeper story. Through his inspiration, my work has been recognized with multiple national and international awards, but the stories behind the images have always mattered most.

Behind every vest is a story.

Behind every dog is a purpose.

Behind every team is a life changed.
